Freedom is a very special place.

Our collection, exhibits, and programs at Freedom Historical Society focus on placing a value on the history of Freedom, New Hampshire. Our community identity and culture are shaped by our history, and an appreciation of history is fundamental to developing an understanding of our individual and collective identities and our sense of place.

Our FHS mission is everlasting.

The Freedom Historical Society began on March 30, 1965, with the first meeting organized by Barbara Dutton and Molly Cunningham. Other founders present at the first (1965) meeting included Melvin Watson, Wesley Milliken, Lettie Thurston, John Brooks, George Littlefield, Emma Perkins, Kenneth Alexander, David Dutton and F. Graham Cunningham. And here we are today, sixty years later, going stronger than ever with 18 board members and a great museum, informative exhibits, and educational programs. More than surviving – we are truly thriving in Freedom thanks to the support of a generous and committed Freedom community.

We are an independent, nonprofit organization.

The Freedom Historical Society was incorporated on May 22, 1968, as a 501(c)3. The Society is an independent, nonprofit, member-supported organization, not a state or town funded agency. This means our member’s donations are tax deductible and go directly to our education and preservation mission.

You know where your gift is going.

Our mission is focused. By giving to the Freedom Historical Society, you know that your gift will be going to support the saving, preserving, and sharing of Freedom, New Hampshire’s history -period! So much goes to Programs and so little to administering the organization. We are a volunteer organization.

We are well managed.

The Board of Directors manages the Freedom Historical Society prudently and for the long term. Sustainability is the priority. Our Board of Directors is hard working and respected, and our executive management is solid. The Board works very hard to maintain governance practices that meet the highest standards for a non-profit.

Your donation will make a difference today and in the future.

The Freedom Historical Society exists today due to the contributions of many individuals who have given generously through membership, donations, and their time. We are grateful to the generations of Freedom Society Members who have come before us and together created an institution of enduring value to Freedom, New Hampshire. That legacy continues today, and individuals are the Society’s largest and most loyal source of support. Thank you!

Thank you for your support!
